Contest: HP MediaSmart Server EX495

November 7, 2009

This is nice. HP is letting me give away a brand new EX495 MediaSmart Sever to go along with my review. To win the 1.5TB Windows Home Server server, you’re going to have to play a little game. Don’t worry, it’s easy. No scavenger hunt this time.

All you need to do is guess the total storage capacity of the CrunchGear staff. There’s seven of us, and we’re counting hard drives and flash drives. This includes game console and DVR hard drives, but not blank media like CD-Rs andSource: CrunchGear RSS Feed

Olympus E-P2 official, patches over E-P1 problems and jacks up the price

November 5, 2009

Functionality-wise there’s not much to complain about the new Olympus E-P2, and in fact it pretty much exactly addresses all the primary issues with the E-P1. The main physical difference is an accessory port right behind and below the hot-shoe, which allows for plugging in the new VF-2 Electronic View Finder, or alternatively the EMA-1 audio input module. We would’ve preferred to have both simultaneously, but we’ll take what we can get. In movie mode the camera now supports full manualSource: Engadget RSS Feed

Myka ION brings Intel Atom and ION graphics into the living room

November 5, 2009

Think of the Myka ION as a nettop built for your HDTV. The little media streamer utilizes an 1.6 GHz Intel Atom 330 CPU and an NVIDIA ION GPU to provide your TV with quality high-definition content. Actually, the Myka ION is more computer than dedicated media playback device, which is good thing. Well, a Linux-powered computer with Boxee and XBMC installed, that is.

The company claims that the Myka ION has enough juice to power Boxee, Hulu, and other Internet sites as well as playbackSource: CrunchGear RSS Feed

Olympus EP-2 Comes Out Early, Almost No New Features

November 5, 2009

A scant five months after releasing its retro-styled, modern-thinking EP-1. Olympus has detailed the EP-2. But don’t worry if you just bought the “old” model — the changes are mostly cosmetic, and the picture-taking internals remain exactly the same.

The first thing you’ll notice is the color. The EP-2 is black, a slightly more discrete color than the rather lovely bare metal of the original, and a world apart from the pimped-out white model. The only other externalSource: Wired RSS Feed

Smartphone, App Phone, Superphone — What’s in a Name?

November 5, 2009

Those of us who fall in the “tech enthusiast” crowd like to, no, need to put a nice, neat tag on everything. We’ve spent years trying to explain the difference between “feature phones” and “smartphones”, because we have to put a simple tag on every piece of tech gear. It’s just how we roll.

David Pogue feels that “smartphone” is no longer fitting for the phones of today. According to Pogue, the new phone is much more capable than the old smartphone, and the term noSource: jkOnTheRun RSS Feed

WATTech – Quantum Computing

November 3, 2009

In my school days, I was quite fascinated with physics as a whole. What started off with an explanation of heat, light, apples falling from trees expanded to an understanding of atoms, electrons, and subatomic particles. Even for a lot of “geeky” school going students, the term “quantum” was not unknown. From Michael Crichton mentioning it in Timeline to millions of sci-fi novels, comics and series throwing it in your face – quantum was here to stay.

Now, Quantum Computing asSource: WATblog RSS Feed

Watch out for Battlefield Bad Company 2 phishing, warns BF blog

November 3, 2009

DICE is letting folks know that there are currently no Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta sign-ups, meaning that any recent invitations you may have received represent scams. Battlefield producer Gordon Van Dyke is letting the community know that any site asking you to sign up for the beta is phishing — he recommends you “give them the middle finger.”
Van Dyke notes that if players aren’t reading an announcement from the company’s site or official Twitter, it just ain’t real.Source: Xbox 360 Fanboy RSS Feed

Fake iPhone comes with magical external QWERTY keyboard you’ve always fantasized about

November 2, 2009

Alright, would you look at this, Apple? We know you require your employees to pay in blood for every single button or moving part that makes it onto a shipping product, but would it really kill you to work in some proper Bluetooth keyboard support for the iPhone so we could enjoy the magical freedom of external QWERTY pads if we so choose? Take this particularly stunning KIRF, for example. Sure, you might find the iPhone-miming handset it’s paired with offensive, but is there really so much Source: Engadget RSS Feed

Carphone Warehouse to sell 1 million iPhones by Christmas

November 2, 2009

Carphone Warehouse, Europe’s largest independent cell phone retailer, announced that it will sell more than 1 million iPhones by Christmas.

The retailer first launched the iPhone in November 2007, and it’s currently offering the smartphone only on the O2 network.

However, starting November 10, Carphone will also sell the iPhone to Orange customers – this being the main reason for the company’s optimistic expectations.

Over the last two years, Carphone was the onlySource: Unwired View RSS Feed
